Frequently Asked Questions

As a prospective client, here are some important questions to ask, along with our answers:

How would you describe your typical asset management client?

We serve primarily affluent individuals living in S. Orange County, with a good mix of retirees, working professionals, and widows. Most clients are age 60+ and we manage their trust and retirement plan assets, with an average account size of

$1.3 million.

What is your primary service offering?

Our Private Client asset management agreement covers the supervision and management of your investment and retirement accounts. Ancillary financial planning advice is included at no additional cost, as is access to eMoney our preferred wealth management tool. The private nature and confidentiality of client information is a top priority at our firm.

What is your investment philosophy and what types of investments do you like?

We follow an asset allocation approach tailored to each client’s risk tolerance and individual objectives. We construct a portfolio of 100% liquid marketable securities with an eye towards low costs and tax efficiency.  We keep investment costs low by using mainly individual stocks and bonds with a few actively managed ETF’s and/or mutual funds layered in for diversification.

We favor investments where we have personal knowledge of their product or service, with a preference for large U.S.-based companies.  Dividends are an important part of our total return, but are not a prerequisite for purchase.  We favor securities for new clients that we already own and will be patient to wait for an appropriate entry point.

We favor balanced portfolios to control volatility and reduce downside risk.  Returns are generated from a combination of interest, dividends, and price appreciation.   We are happy to discuss our current recommendations once you submit your answers to our 10 questions.

Where is my account held?

We have chosen Schwab Advisor Services, a division of the Charles Schwab Corporation to provide brokerage and custodial services for our clients.  The accounts are titled in your name and you retain full power and authority over the accounts.  You delegate authority to WFA, Inc. under a limited power of attorney to place trades and move funds on your behalf.  All service requests go through our firm, but Schwab Alliance is available to clients of WFA for technical web-access assistance.

Who will manage my account?

An investment professional will be assigned as your relationship manager and they will be your primary point of contact and responsible for the oversight and management of your account.  All clients are clients of the firm and we utilize a team approach to share our best ideas with daily meetings to discuss current events, interest rates, and our holdings.

How often shall I expect to hear from you?

There are typically one or two meetings to gather data and get signed up. Annual meetings are typically held thereafter, with email and phone calls being the primary form of communication. An additional meeting is available for new clients after the first quarter to review statements and confirm we are on track with your financial goals.

You will receive a quarterly bulletin from our office that addresses timely investment and wealth management topics and includes commentary on holdings and recent changes.  Schwab provides trade confirmations and monthly statements, while our office produces a quarterly portfolio report with graphics and a detailed analysis of the portfolio.

Will you work with my C.P.A. and attorney?

Absolutely!  Minimizing your income tax is important to us, as well as having a properly drafted estate plan, so we will definitely collaborate with your other advisors to act in your best interests.

How does your management fee work?

This is our sole source of compensation, and we bill quarterly in advance based on the quarter-end account values.  The minimum quarterly fee is $1,250.  This represents an annual fee of 1% based on the $500,000 minimum account size.

Our competitive fee schedule is as follows:

First $1,000,000 - 1.00%

Next $4,000,000 - 0.75%

Next $5,000,000 - 0.50%

Over $10,000,000 - 0.25%

This structure provides a built in incentive to preserve and grow your account value.

If I don’t want on-going asset management, do you offer stand-alone advice for a flat fee?

Yes, under our Financial Advisory Agreement we offer unbiased advice on an hourly or flat fee basis regarding investments, risk management, retirement planning, and estate planning.
